Wrestling develops full-body strength, agility, and endurance. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) himself engaged in wrestling, most notably when he wrestled Rukānah, one of the strongest men of Quraysh, and defeated him - demonstrating the value of physical strength in Islam.
Wrestling sharpens focus, strategy, and discipline. It requires quick thinking, patience, and control under pressure, training the mind to remain composed while making calculated decisions in challenging situations.
Physical strength in Islam is tied to purpose. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer…” (Sahih Muslim). Wrestling becomes a means of building strength that can be used in the obedience of Allah and in service to others.
Wrestling teaches humility, restraint, and self-control. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“The strong person is not the one who can wrestle his opponent down, but the one who controls himself when he is angry.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Through this, a person learns to manage emotions, remain calm under pressure, and carry strength with character.
