Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (reported in Sunan Abu Dawud)
Archery develops strength, balance, and control. It teaches that true accuracy begins with mastering and steadying the body. "O offspring of Ishmael! Practice archery as your father was a great archer" (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Archery sharpens focus and discipline, training the mind to remain present and committed-shot after shot-with patience and determination, Archery is often described as a "moving meditation" because it requires a profound unification of the mind, body, and spirit to succeed.
Spiritually, the sport cultivates mindfulness by forcing the archer to block out external "noise"- such as worldly worries or digital distractions- and remain fully present in the moment of the draw. In the Islamic tradition, it is viewed as an act of worship (ibadah) that sharpens the intention (niyyah) and develops virtues like patience (sabr), humility, and self-control.
Archery also brings calm and relief. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) encouraged its use as a way to ease worry and bring tranquillity to the heart. "There is no harm for any of you to take up your bow when you are overtaken by care, and thereby do away with your worries” (As-Saghir at-Tabarani)
